Wyoming Sounds to put on your Radar by Aaron Davis

A pithy introduction to some Wyoming musicians by Aaron Davis…of the Screen Door Porch and the Boondocks and solo:

I will take a comparison to Will Oldham/Bonnie Prince Billy every day of the week:

JSShanghai’d Saturday morning nostalgia

JSShanghai'd

For more than one presidential term, the Shanghai’d has been busy playing music all the around WYO and beyond, with one skilled musician after another jumping on and off, year after year, gig after gig, from the first show at the Big Horn Mtn Stage to the Snowy Range Music Fest.   This morning seemed like a good time as any to get nostalgic.  and say thanks again to everyone for their contributions to keeping it all afloat.

Laramie Singer-Songwriter Competition–in November

wyomingcentennial2larger

hi again

another announcement for those interested in the Fine Arts or participating, listening, heckling or all the above….Laramie is having its own S-S competition at the Buckhorn.

Like American Idol perhaps, and yet different–more introspection & guitars and less of a light show.    (although the Buckhorn and introspection are not really roommates)

here are the rules via the promoter/organizer/fiddle player Jon Gardzelewski:

Still working out the details, but we’re going to do this right and be fair. Here is a draft of the rules:

1). 3-4 original songs played and sung by the contest with an instrument of their choice.

2). Lyrics must be printed out for distribution.

3). Contestants judge and select their top 3 songwriters, and their top 3 songs for each round.

4). First round takes place over two Fridays: November 15th & 22nd.

5) Top 3 songwriters from each night compete in the final round, December 6th, where they will play 5 songs. Final judging TBD.

6). Money prizes.

7). Possible radio deal for winning songwriter and best song.

. Winners without recordings will be given a short recording session for an opportunity at Radio play. Details TBD.

9). Spread the word, lets get some talent out on stage!

A bit more background information on me.  Around these parts, I have played with the WYOmericana Caravan, Snowy Range Festival, WYO Theatre, Gryphon Theatre, Centennial Uptown Breakdown, Pengilly’s in Boise, Avogadro’s Number, Hodi’s Half-Note, Steve’s Guitars, Live at the Denison Ranch, Nowoodstock Festival, Big West Arts Festival, Underground Music Showcase in Denver, Ruts Festival, WHAT Fest, the Wort, the Pink Garter, and more.   Last year, we represented Wyoming in Memphis at the International Blues Challenge (we were the only musician of the 1000s on Beale Street, however, with a mandolin).
